Rock Dancer

Dancer,
   I have never seen you,
But surely you must dance there,
In the dark of the coal shaft,
In the dust of the diamond mine.

There in earth depth start
A curving form in the still stone,
Slowly twisting in the mountain heart,
    All alone,
      In a shadowless place,
And the swift sparkle of the rock face
Lending brief fire to your relentless grace,
Turning ever to the mute gem light,
To the force of star tide, earth beat,
Always silent as saphire and ruby,
      Amethyst and emerald,
Trace the slow patterns of your feet.
