"Thank you," said Katerina. Katerina ate and threw precious crumbs of toast to the birds as she had promised and gave two squirrels a piece of her muffin which probably wasn't good for them but they weren't fussy. Soon she was feeling a lot better and settled back to enjoy the tea she had left until last while the tables and chairs were packed away around her. She'd almost forgotten hyena-man and his cronies when she saw two men enter the square by the south gate. She didn't recognise them but they didn't look like they'd come to enjoy the trees and the fountains and they made her uneasy. Katerina snatched up the umbrella and stood to leave. The café proprietor immediately whisked away the abandoned tray and picked up the table and chair, one in each hand, folding them as he lifted them. "Come again, miss," he said. "Thank you," said Katerina automatically, and she hurried away towards the hidden, northern gate but hyena-man was beside her before she'd taken half-a-dozen steps. She turned in an attempt to pass him but he grasped her wrist and pulled her close. "What a coincidence," he said pleasantly as his companions joined him. "Help!" she called and tried, unsuccessfully, to pull herself free. The owner of the café looked towards them and one of the men called. "It's okay. She's his girlfriend." If the café owner hesitated it was only for a moment. He had already locked up and whatever was going on 'over there' was none of his business. "Shout for help again and I'll cripple you!" hissed hyena-man. "Help! Call the police!" called Katerina. Hyena-man slapped her hard across the face momentarily stunning her to silence. Please help me! thought Katerina desperately and, half unconsciously, pulled a card from her pocket. "What are you doing?" hissed one of the men seizing her hand and the card fell to the ground and fluttered along the path with the fallen litter of leaves. It was the Knight of Cups, she noted dismally as she automatically tried to retrieve it but she was now crushed between the three guys and being marched away between them. There was no Knight of Cups, she thought, and if there was, what chance would he have against the Demon of Swords? She struggled to get free but was held imprisoned in the apparently loving grip of her captor. To passers-by they would probably have looked like a slightly drunk party of young tourists. The crushing hold hyena-man had on her left hand, the one that he was forcibly holding in place around his own waist and the knife that his companion had momentarily pulled from his pocket and flashed at her, prevented her for the moment from crying out again. |
