Fire Dancer

Flame leaper, dancing ragged,
Through the bright fire and the black smoke,
Choosing a jagged path through the charred places
      where the fire broke,
The scorched earth all around and underfoot,
And the black bones of the burnt wood
As you gaily pass through a rain of ash,
Beneath fired branches, over blackened root,
Not caring that the trees crash,
    The forest burns,
It is to the timbre of your laughter,
And your heart longs only for the crescendo of your
        song.

So the red ribbons gash a land
Not blessed by the flicker of your hand,
Demon dancer in the fast blaze,
    You made me afraid,
Even as your smile held my gaze.
