There was no sign that hyena-man had heard but he suddenly pushed Katerina away from him so that she stumbled. "You want this little whore?" he asked contemptuously. "She's yours." He turned and strode from the garden without a look back, as though he simply had no more time to waste. Umbrella man looked at Katerina with an expression of relief so telling that it belied his earlier calm and made her laugh. "Are you all right?" he asked her. "Thanks to you," said Katerina. "How did you know my name?" "I went back to the café where I met you but you had gone. The waitress knew your name. How did you know mine?" "A lucky guess," said Katerina. "Did you come back for your pen?" she asked. The young man hesitated. "Yes," he said. "Well, partly for the pen." "The umbrella too," acknowledged Katerina. The young man laughed. "No," he said. "I thought I might ask you to have a coffee with me." "Me?" Katerina was confused. Why would the Knight of Cups ask a homeless girl out to coffee? "If you don't mind," said the young man. "I should introduce myself properly," he added in his rather odd friendly, formal manner. "My name's Richard Emberton." "I'd like to have coffee with you, Richard Emberton," she said. "Here's your card," he said, passing the tarot card back to her. "You must tell me about that," he said. "How did you learn to read them?" "My mother taught me," said Katerina, giving him the gold pen in exchange. "Did they tell you anything about me?" asked Richard. |
