"They told me that you will give me a job," said Katerina. Deep in the pack the magician winked at her. The young man laughed. "I'm sure I can arrange something," he said. Together they walked out of the garden back towards the tower and gothic arches of St Pancras but Katerina knew she had nothing to fear within its walls anymore. "I'm not what that person said you know," she explained a little obliquely, unable to repeat the word that had been pinned to her. "I'm not a goblin." The young man laughed. "Of course not," he said. "You're an angel." "Of course I am," said Katerina, laughing in her turn, and before the delighted eyes of the young man, she spread shimmering golden wings and flew, lifting effortlessly from the grey paving and soaring high above the oblivious crowds into the great blue curve of the sky. Then she was back beside him and the first raindrop fell from the transparent cloud as though at last shaken from the heavens by the breath of Katerina's laughter as it still chimed in the silvered air. The droplet burst brightly at their feet and a moment later a brilliant shower sparkled all around them and a million droplets splashed like diamonds onto the glittering pavement. Passers-by paused to look up at the rainbow they knew must arc above the city streets and, as the rush hour crowd spilled out along the pavements on every side, the gold tipped, blue umbrella flowered above the girl's head to meet the sudden downpour. **** |
